What Does Montessori Look Like in Real Life? A Look Inside Our First Open House
Parents Exploring One of Three Classrooms at Montessori Children’s Center
On Saturday, April 25th, 2026, we invited parents and caregivers to our first Open House, to step into the classroom and experience Montessori for themselves. Families had the chance to get hands-on with the materials. They also had the chance to meet our team, ask questions, and get to know the people behind the new MCC.
Montessori is something many parents have heard about. But it becomes much more meaningful when you see it in action.
You notice the calm of the classroom. You see the purpose behind each material. You begin to understand how a thoughtfully prepared environment helps children build independence, focus, problem-solving skills, and pride in their own work.
At MCC, we believe early childhood education should do more than keep children busy. It should do more than prepare them for the next academic milestone. It should help children build the foundations they will carry for life.
That means honoring each child’s natural curiosity. It means supporting each child’s individual development. It means helping children grow into confident, capable, and thoughtful people.

A Guided Introduction to Montessori
During the Open House, we walked families through the story of Montessori and the nearly 50-year legacy of Montessori Children’s Center. We also shared what Montessori looks like in practice.
We helped parents see what makes Montessori so different from a traditional preschool setting, and why that difference matters so much in the early years.
We talked about why a child-sized classroom matters. We talked about why uninterrupted work time builds real concentration. We talked about how mixed-age groups help children develop kindness and confidence. And we shared what it means for a teacher to guide a child’s learning, rather than control it.
For many families, this is when Montessori starts to click. It is not simply a different classroom style. It is a deeply intentional way of seeing children as capable, curious, and ready to take part in their own learning.

Experiencing the Materials Firsthand
One of the most meaningful parts of the Open House was inviting parents to work with the Montessori materials themselves.
Montessori materials are beautiful, purposeful, and carefully designed. Each material invites the child to use their hands, focus their attention, repeat an activity, notice patterns, correct mistakes, and discover something independently.
When parents try the materials themselves, they often see how much learning is happening beneath the surface.
A simple activity may be building fine motor control. It may be building concentration, coordination, order, patience, problem-solving, and confidence all at once.
You see it in the calm of the classroom.
You feel it in the purpose behind each material.
You understand it when you watch how each activity quietly supports a child’s growth.

Exploring Our Outdoor Garden and Play Space
We also spent time exploring our outdoor garden and play space, one of the most special parts of our campus.
At MCC, children have generous time outdoors every day. Our outdoor environment gives children room to move, observe, imagine, care for living things, and build a relationship with the natural world. Nature education, movement, art, music, practical life, and open-ended play are woven into the child’s day.
We want children to feel connected to themselves, to one another, and to the world around them.

Continuing a 50-Year Legacy
MCC has been part of the San Francisco Montessori community for 50 years. Reopening our school is both a responsibility and a joy.
Our goal is to honor the authentic Montessori education that MCC has long been known for. We are also building a warm, thoughtful, and well-supported school community for today’s families.
On June 1, we are reopening our school for children ages 2 to 6, with a Toddler Program for ages 2 to 3 and a Preschool and Kindergarten Program for ages 3 to 6. This summer, we are also excited to introduce our Montessori Discovery Program for children ages 3 to 6, running from June 29 to August 7.
